Overview

What is an F-2 Dependent Visa?

The F-2 visa is a dependent visa for the spouse and unmarried children under 21 years of age of an F-1 student. The F-2 dependent’s status is tied to the F-1 student’s status and remains valid while the F-1 student maintains lawful status. F-2 visa holders may reside in the U.S. with the F-1 student and enjoy various benefits, though they are subject to certain restrictions regarding employment and full-time academic study.

How It Works

Application Process

1

F-1 Student Receives Form I-20

The primary F-1 student must first obtain admission to a SEVP-certified U.S. school and receive their Form I-20. The F-2 application depends on the F-1 student's status.

2

Request F-2 Form I-20

The school issues separate Form I-20 documents for each eligible dependent. The F-1 student must request F-2 I-20s from their school's DSO for each qualifying dependent.

3

Complete Form DS-160

Each F-2 dependent completes their own DS-160 Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application separately. Care Immigration Service provides assistance with organizing the required information.

4

Gather Supporting Documents

Prepare relationship documents (marriage certificate for spouse, birth certificate for children) and financial support documents demonstrating the F-1 student can support their dependents.

5

Schedule Visa Interview

Each F-2 dependent schedules a visa interview at the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate. Dependents may be able to attend the interview together.

6

Attend the Visa Interview

Bring all required documents to the interview. Be prepared to demonstrate the relationship to the F-1 student and the student's ability to provide financial support.

7

Travel to the United States

F-2 dependents may travel to the U.S. with the F-1 student simultaneously or join the F-1 student later during the academic program.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about F-2 Dependent Visa

No. F-2 spouses and children are generally not authorized to work in the United States. Working in the U.S. without proper authorization is a serious immigration violation that could affect both the F-2 dependent's status and potentially the F-1 student's status. If an F-2 spouse wishes to work, they would need to change to a status that permits employment.

Yes! F-2 children may attend elementary and secondary school (K-12) in the United States. However, F-2 children are NOT permitted to pursue full-time post-secondary academic study (college or university). If an F-2 child wishes to attend college or university, they would need to obtain an F-1 student visa in their own right.

F-2 spouses may participate in certain educational activities, but NOT full-time academic study. They may take recreational or avocational courses that are not for credit. If an F-2 spouse wishes to pursue a full-time academic program, they would need to obtain an F-1 visa. Some courses that count toward a degree may require a Change of Status to F-1.

The F-2 visa and status remain valid as long as the primary F-1 student maintains lawful F-1 status. The F-2 status is directly tied to the F-1 student's status. If the F-1 student graduates, transfers to a different status, or loses their status, the F-2 dependent's status is similarly affected.

F-2 status is entirely dependent on the F-1 student maintaining lawful status. If the F-1 student's status ends, the F-2 dependent's status also ends. Dependents would need to either depart the U.S. or apply for a different status. It's important to plan ahead during transitions.

Yes. Each F-2 dependent needs their own Form I-20 issued by the F-1 student's school. The F-1 student must request F-2 I-20s from their school's DSO for each qualifying dependent. These separate I-20s are required for each dependent's visa application and entry into the U.S.

Yes, F-2 dependents can travel internationally, but you must maintain a valid F-2 visa stamp in your passport to re-enter the U.S. You'll also need an F-2 I-20 endorsed by the DSO within the past year. F-2 dependents can travel independently from the F-1 student, though the F-1 student's status must remain active.

F-2 applications generally require an active F-1 student who is already enrolled or has been admitted. Typically, the F-1 student needs to have their I-20 before dependents can begin the F-2 application process, as the F-2 application requires a copy of the F-1 student's I-20 and other documents.

Children must be unmarried and under 21 years of age to qualify for F-2 dependent status. Once a child turns 21 or gets married, they no longer qualify for F-2 status and must either depart the U.S. or obtain a different visa status. Parents, siblings, and other relatives are NOT eligible for F-2 status.

No. F-2 status is only available to the legal spouse and unmarried children under 21 of an F-1 student. Parents, siblings, and other relatives are not eligible for F-2 status. If parents wish to visit their student, they may be able to apply for a B-2 tourist visa for a temporary visit, subject to normal B-2 visa eligibility requirements.
